just a quick question: Is it still as shit as it was in beta or has it improved? Are there still guards spawning out of nowhere to whack you? Are the animations still looking like utter crap, are their models still as ridiculous as they were in beta?

Its improved a hell of a long way since beta but not much on those ways yet.
Guards are still insta whack, when someone calls guards , and when theyre working, occasionaly they take 30ses to spawn, but thats only in blue towns anyhow.
Animations that are in seem ok to me, never had issue with models myself, and hires textures are still to be added.
What has changed so far in major terms is the desync got fixed, lag and server and client stability keeps improving. Although still issues.
Thieving got added in, ghost mode works like uo now and u can materialize briefly , also spirit speak and res spell added in.
Archery got its proper trajectory and affected by wind, more mounts added along with mount armour and saddles. guildkeeps and wars and guild territory control is in. specail spear stance got adde in so u can hold spear against ground and impale a charging horse,
Player vendors at houses been added in along with some other add ons I believe.
Still lots to be added in, still needs populated dungeons, although 1st big rare mobs etc being added, in upcoming patches we will be getting a Flash UI intead of old ui and maybe Speedtree implemented as they now have the upgrade from Epic for the UE engine allowing them to incorporate it.
Stuff is being added pretty much weekly, along with bugs & issues then fixes etc , its coming along and going in the right direction but still has a ways to go, but dont all MMO`s :p
